What to Write in a Sympathy Card When Nothing Feels Right
Jump to the 62 lines
The short answer
What to write in a sympathy card comes down to three things: say you're sorry, name the person who died, and add one true thing about them. Try "Walt waved from that porch every morning. The street feels different without it." If you never met them, try "I didn't know your brother, and I'm so sorry." If it's late, send it anyway: "I'm months late, and every bit as sorry."
A sympathy card doesn’t have to say anything wise, though many people stall on one because they think it does. Say you’re sorry and name the person who died. Add one true thing about them if you have one, and one specific offer if you mean it. Then sign it.
The VA’s National Center for PTSD describes a survey of grieving people that found “direct expressions of empathy, willingness to talk about the deceased” among what helped. “I’m so sorry about Ruth, and I’ll always remember her terrible driving” does both.
Don’t assume the person who died was easy to love, or that the relationship was close. “I’m so sorry about your dad” is safe when you don’t know how things were. “He adored you” isn’t. And don’t worry about being late. The same VA page says people often “really appreciate contact months later, when most interest has dropped off,” so a card months from now is still worth sending.

What to Write in Sympathy Cards: Common Questions
What to write in a sympathy card for someone you don't know?
Say who you are and how you're connected, then say you're sorry. "I work with your daughter, and I'm so sorry about your husband" is complete. Don't reach for a memory you don't have, and don't try to sound closer than you are. Print your name clearly under your signature.
What to say in a very late sympathy card?
Say it's late in a few words, name the person, and add one true thing. "I'm months late, and every bit as sorry" covers it. Skip the long explanation. The VA's National Center for PTSD says grieving people often value contact months later, so a late card may be the one that's read twice.
What is a good verse to write in a sympathy card?
If you share their faith, the best verse is one they already love. Check the funeral program, or ask someone close to the family what was read at the service, then copy it from the translation they use. If you're not sure of their beliefs, leave verses out. We don't list verses here because the family's own choice will beat any list.
What to write in a non religious sympathy card?
Everything on this page except the labeled religious group. Name the person, say you're sorry, and add a memory or a specific offer. You don't need a substitute for faith language. "I'm so sorry about your mom" is already a full sentence.
What to write in a sympathy card for a Jewish person?
Plain words suit any tradition: "I'm so sorry about your father. I'd love to hear about him sometime." If you've heard the family use a traditional phrase, you can use it too. If you haven't, a card is a poor place to try one for the first time, and this site isn't an authority on it.
What to write in a sympathy card for drug overdose?
Write about the person, not the cause. Mention how they died only if the family has, in plain words. The same goes for suicide: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention advises saying "died by suicide" and leaving out any detail of the method. Don't ask what happened, and don't suggest anyone could have stopped it.
What to write in a sympathy card for funeral flowers?
The florist's card is tiny, so write one line and your full name, and say how you know them if they might not remember: "With sympathy, from Joan's friends at the library." Save anything longer for a card of its own.
What do you write in a sympathy card from a couple?
Write "we" and have both people sign in their own hand. If only one of you knew the person, say so: "Tom never met your mom, but he's heard the stories, and we're both so sorry."
How do you end a sympathy card?
"Love," if it's true. Otherwise "With sympathy," "Thinking of you," or just your name. Avoid "Stay strong" and anything that sounds like a request. If you've made an offer, end on the specifics: "I'll text tomorrow about dinner."
What if they've said they don't want to be here?
A card isn't enough for this. Ask them directly whether they're thinking about suicide, stay with them if you can, and don't promise to keep it a secret. Call or text 988 together, and call 911 if they're in immediate danger. Crisis lines also take calls from people who are worried about someone else.
