Blank white card on a kraft envelope beside a gift with gold ribbon and scissors, ready for what to write in a graduation card for someone you don't know

The short answer

Be honest about the distance. That covers most of what to write in a graduation card for someone you don't know. Say how you know them, congratulate them by name, and wish them one small, specific thing. Try: "We've only met a couple of times, but your mom lights up when she talks about you." Nobody expects a speech from a neighbor. The 55 lines here cover a friend's kid, a neighbor, a distant relative, a coworker and people you've never met.

Any big sentiment in this card sounds borrowed, because it is. You don’t know their major, their plans or how they feel about their mother’s friends. That’s fine, and it’s also the way in: be warm about the little you do know, and honest about the rest.

How to Write a Graduation Card When You Don’t Know Them Well

  1. Say who you are. A graduate gets a stack of cards and may not place your name. “I’m Dana, I work with your dad” saves them from asking.
  2. Say one thing you actually know, even if it’s secondhand. Something a parent told you, or something you saw from the porch. If you’ve got nothing, congratulate them on the day itself.
  3. Wish them something small and specific. A good summer, an easy move-in, kind roommates. Small wishes don’t assume anything about their plans.

Copy the one that fits, and fill in your own details:

  • If you know the family: “Congratulations, [name]. I’m [your name], [how you know their family]. I’ve heard a lot about [school or achievement], and I’m so glad for you. Wishing you [a good summer or an easy move].”
  • If you’ve never met: “[Name], we haven’t met, but [parent or relative] talks about you all the time. Congratulations on a big day.”
  • If it’s a coworker: “[Name], I know how much you juggled to get here. Congratulations from all of us at [workplace].”

Sign your full name. They may need it for the thank-you note, and it spares them a confusing conversation with their mom. If you need more options, what to write in a graduation card has lines sorted by tone, and what to write in a graduation card for a friend covers people you know better. What to Write in a Graduation Card to Someone You Don't Know at All

It happens: a coworker's son, a cousin's stepdaughter or a friend of a friend whose announcement landed in your mailbox. Say who you are first, so they don't have to ask their mom.

You won't know me. I work with your dad, and he has shown me your picture more than once.
We've never met, but I've heard a lot about this day. I'm [your name], a friend of your aunt's.
Your grandmother and I play cards on Thursdays. She has mentioned your grades at every game.
I'm the friend from your mom's book club, the one who always asks about you. Congratulations.
A stranger's good wishes still count, so here are mine.
I've never met you, but anyone who makes your parents this happy has done something right.
Please accept congratulations from someone who couldn't pick you out of a crowd but is rooting for you anyway.

What to Write in a Graduation Card for a Friend's Kid

You may have known them since they were small and still not know much about them now. Mention something from the old days, and let them off the hook for remembering it.

I met you when you were in diapers. I promise not to tell that story at the party.
Your dad and I have been friends since before you were born, so I've had a long time to hear how great you are.
I've been to a lot of your parents' dinners. You were the one who cleared the table without being asked.

Your mother and I have spent a lot of hours talking about you. Most of it was good.
You grew up while your parents and I were busy talking in the kitchen.
To my friend's son: you've got your father's height and, luckily, your mother's sense.

Graduation Wishes for Your Daughter's Friend or Your Son's Friend

You've fed them, driven them and possibly worried about them. A card from a friend's parent can stay light, and it doesn't need to guess how long the friendship will last.

You've eaten a lot of my pancakes. It's been a pleasure having you at the table.
You've been a good friend to my daughter, and I've noticed. Thank you, and congratulations.
My son talks about you more than he realizes. We're so happy for you today.
I may not know you well yet, but you've always said thank you for dinner, and that tells me plenty.
You know where we keep the spare towels. That makes you family enough for a card.
To my daughter's friend: you've been on time every time. That's more than I can say for her.
I've driven you home more times than either of us can count. Drive safely from here on.
Wherever you're headed next, you've got a kitchen table here.

What to Write in a Graduation Card for a Neighbor

You've watched them back out of the driveway for years. That's plenty to write about.

The street's going to be quieter without your car stereo. We'll survive, barely.
You waved at me every morning on your way to the bus for years. I'll miss that wave.
Congratulations from the house with the barking dog. He'll miss you too.
You brought our trash cans up every time you saw them out there. Nobody asked. Congratulations.
If you ever need a ladder, a reference or a cup of sugar, you know which door.

What to Write in a Graduation Card for a Distant Relative

You may share a last name and one reunion a decade. Say how you're related if there's any doubt, and don't claim more closeness than you have.

I'm your mother's cousin, the one from the reunion with the potato salad. Congratulations.
We mostly see each other at weddings, so it's nice to have another reason to say hello.
Family news travels slowly, but yours reached me, and it made my week.

It's been too long since the last reunion, and you've clearly been busy.
Our branch of the family is cheering for your branch today.

You brought your textbooks to lunch for two years. The whole break room is happy for you.
We're all glad for you, and a little worried about who'll fix the printer.

What to Write in a Graduation Card When You Don't Know Them: Common Questions

What to write in a grad card for someone you don't know well?

Say how you know them, congratulate them by name and add one small wish, like a good first semester or an easy move. Two sentences are plenty. Skip the long quote about the future. It could have come from anyone.

What to write in a graduation card to someone you don't know?

Introduce yourself first, because they may not know who you are. "You won't know me. I work with your dad, and he has shown me your picture more than once" tells them everything they need. Then congratulate them and sign your full name, so they can write a thank-you note.

What to write in a graduation card for a distant relative?

Say how you're related, in case it's been a while, then wish them well. Try "I'm your mother's cousin, the one from the reunion with the potato salad." If you'd like to know them better, invite them to get in touch when they're near you.

What to write in a graduation card for a friend's kid?

Use something from when they were small, like a lemonade stand or the time they cleared the table without being asked. Keep it short, and speak to them as the adult they're becoming. Then sign it the way they'd recognize, such as "your dad's friend from the softball team."

What to write in graduation card for employee?

Congratulate them on the degree, name what you saw them juggle to get it, and offer something concrete, like a reference. Don't turn it into a talk about their future with the company. Try "Whatever this degree leads to, here or somewhere else, you have my reference."

Do you have to give a gift to a graduate you don't know well?

Not if all you got was an announcement. Emily Post says of graduation announcements, "You are not obligated to give a gift," so a card alone is a complete response. If you were invited to the ceremony or the party, it says to "send or bring a gift," and a small one will do.
