Anniversary Gifts by Year: Traditional and Modern, From Paper to Diamond

Green gift box tied with twine beside flowers in a jar, one way to wrap anniversary gifts by year, traditional and modern

The short answer

Anniversary gifts by year, traditional and modern, start with paper and clocks at year 1 and end with diamond at year 60. Along the way you'll find wood and silverware at year 5 and silver at year 25. The full table is below, including where the lists disagree. Treat it as a custom, then add what no list can: "Year one is paper, they say. Here's a sheet of it with the truth written down."

Anniversary gifts by year are a custom, so use the list for ideas and ignore it when it doesn’t help. You’ll also see it called anniversary gifts for each year of marriage, or wedding gifts for each anniversary. The idea is one material for each year, plus a modern alternative. The published lists don’t fully agree, so here’s what they say and where they split.

Anniversary Gifts by Year: Traditional and Modern Table

8 Bronze Linens or lace
9 Pottery or china Leather goods
10 Tin or aluminum Diamond
11 Steel Fashion jewelry
12 Silk Pearls or colored gems
13 Lace Textiles or furs

This table combines two lists: one compiled by librarians at the Chicago Public Library, which we read in an archived copy from 2007, and a current one from the retailer Blue Nile. We couldn’t read several other well-known lists when we checked, so this table doesn’t claim to settle anything.

Where Anniversary Gifts by Year Lists Disagree

  • Year 4: the one real conflict between the two lists. The library list says linen or silk. Blue Nile says flowers in its table and fruit and flowers in its text. Wikipedia’s table splits it by country: fruit and flowers in its US column, linen and silk in its UK column.
  • Year 6: Blue Nile adds candy to iron.
  • Year 7: the library list says wool, with copper as the alternative. Blue Nile says copper.
  • Year 10: Blue Nile’s table says aluminum, and its text says aluminum and tin. The library list says tin or aluminum.
  • Years 11 to 14: Blue Nile doesn’t list them, so these rows rest on the library list.
  • Year 14: the list says ivory. We don’t suggest buying real ivory, and we didn’t research the rules on it. Use it as a color, or go with the modern gold jewelry.

Anniversary Gift Ideas by Year and Budget

The picks below are labeled by year and material, and some cover two years because a material shows up on both lists.

  • Under $50: year 10 aluminum tin, year 9 stoneware mug, year 3 goatskin journal
  • $50 to $100: year 20 china cup, any-year material art, year 4 calamondin tree, year 25 frame, year 50 frame, year 1 hand-cut map, year 15 crystal vase
  • Over $100: year 5 tree ring art, year 7 penny art, year 6 cast iron pan, year 2 cotton blanket

Ship times run from days to weeks on these, so check the estimate before you order, especially for the map, the pan and the china cup. If you’re shopping for one person, see these anniversary gifts for your husband or anniversary gifts for your wife. For someone else’s milestone, try anniversary gifts for older couples.

These picks were chosen from merchant product pages, based on price, the stated material and how well each fits its year. They aren’t hands-on reviews. Prices were checked on November 5, 2026, and can change.

A couple who like a pun and have three dates worth marking.

A couple who like fresh flowers, or a 15th anniversary you want to mark properly.

Write with it: Put the wedding photo in it. Let people see how young we were.

Good for
Children chipping in for a parent's 25th, or a spouse who wants a simple display piece.

Good for
A family marking a golden anniversary, with a photo everyone recognizes.
Skip it if
The couple has enough frames. A dinner with everyone present may mean more to them.

What to Write With Anniversary Gifts by Year

Short is fine. Copy one as it is, or use it to find your own words.

Year one is paper, they say. Here's a sheet of it with the truth written down.
Year two is cotton, which is soft and shrinks in the wash. We've both had that kind of year.
Year three is leather. Tough, and better with wear. I'll take it as a compliment.
Five years is wood. I looked it up after I'd already knocked on some.
Year six is iron, which sounds about right for anyone who's assembled furniture with me.
Ten years is tin, which seems low. I'd have gone with something that costs more to replace.
The list says twenty-five is silver. I'd have said we've earned a better couch.
Fifty years is gold. Nobody earns it by being easy to live with, and you two are the proof.

Anniversary Gifts by Year, Traditional and Modern, to Skip

  • A gift picked only because it matches the listA tin bucket is on theme and still a bad present if they'd never want one. The material is a prompt, and it can't do the work for you.
  • Appliances at year 4, unless they askedThat's what the modern list says, but a vacuum is a real risk, however you wrap it. Ask first, or buy the thing they've been circling.
  • Real ivory at year 14The list still says it. We don't suggest buying it. Treat ivory as a color, or go with the modern gold jewelry.
  • Diamonds you can't afford because the list says soThe modern list says diamond at year 10 and year 30. It's only a list, and nobody should go into debt to follow it.
  • A seller's chart as the final wordProduct pages keep their own versions. One listing we checked shows emerald for year 20, while the lists here say china and platinum.

Anniversary Gifts by Year: Common Questions

What are anniversary gifts for each year of marriage?

Traditionally: paper, cotton, leather, linen or silk, wood, iron, wool or copper, bronze, pottery and tin for years 1 to 10, then steel, silk, lace, ivory and crystal for years 11 to 15. This table then picks up at 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60: china, silver, pearl, coral, ruby, sapphire, gold, emerald and diamond.

What is a gift for a 10-year anniversary?

Traditionally tin or aluminum, and the modern lists say diamond or diamond jewelry. That's a wide gap in price, so choose by what you can afford. A $19.79 aluminum tin works if you fill it with something that took effort, like ten years of saved notes.

What are 5-year anniversary gifts, traditional and modern?

Wood is the traditional material for year 5. The modern lists say silverware or flatware. The tree ring wall hanging is the wood pick on this page, and an engraved serving piece would cover the modern side.

What are anniversary gifts by year 1-100?

This table won't get you there. It runs to year 60, and past year 15 it covers only some round numbers. If you see a material for every year up to 100, ask where it came from. The library list we used does run on, with gaps, to year 100, with entries like land at 41 and groceries at 44. Blue Nile doesn't back up most of those years, so we left them out.

Do you have to follow anniversary gifts by year traditional lists?

No. They're customs, and the published versions don't fully agree with each other. Use the material if it gives you an idea, and ignore it if a better gift comes to mind. Nobody opens a present and checks it against a table.

What do you get for an anniversary gift?

Try the year's traditional material first, then the modern one, because they can be very different. Year 4 is linen, silk, fruit or flowers on one side and appliances on the other. If neither sparks anything, choose something tied to a memory you share, and let the list go.
